Burnout, Peer Support, and the Power of Being Seen
This episode explores burnout in healthcare education, why emotional exhaustion is so common, and how peer debriefs and quick check-ins can help students reset. It also highlights the power of being seen, supported, and encouraged by a community that understands the pressure.
Chapter 1
The Parking Lot Panic and Morning Shift Greeting
Amelia
You know that moment where you are just sitting in your car at 6:45 in the morning... heater blowing on your feet, hands gripping the steering wheel, and you are literally staring at the hospital doors thinking... can I actually step inside today?
Tyrone Wigfall
Oh, I know it way too well. The... the... the parking lot heavy pause. You are sitting there questioning if you even have the fuel in your tank for shift or for class.
Amelia
But look, you did step out of the car, and you turned us on! So good morning to our amazing Innovative School of Health family, and good morning to every single person tuning in right now.
Tyrone Wigfall
Good morning, good morning! We are so glad you are right here with us today.
Amelia
Because look, that feeling in the car... it is not just you being tired. I was actually reading this massive research study looking across medical education, and get this... over 37 percent of healthcare students are dealing with real, actual burnout symptoms right now.
Tyrone Wigfall
37 percent. Man, that... that number hits hard, but it does not surprise me at all. When you combine intense academic workloads with emotional heavy lifting, people get drained.
Amelia
Right, emotional exhaustion, feeling worn out... it is a real system overload.
Tyrone Wigfall
And what I want to tell everybody listening in their car or on the bus... if you are feeling that doubt on day one or week three, that is not a defect. It usually means you care deeply. You are learning how to carry heavy human responsibility, and that takes time.
Chapter 2
Why Peer Support Beats Polished Perfection
Amelia
It really does. And... and... and what makes it harder is the isolation, right? Picture this... you finish a intense clinical rotation or a tough lab, you go home to your family or your friends who are not in healthcare... and you try to explain why you are mentally exhausted, but they just... they do not quite get it.
Tyrone Wigfall
Yeah. They love you, but... but they were not in the room. They did not see what you saw.
Amelia
Exactly! And there is actually research on this exact dynamic from medical education studies. Researchers found that students get way more relief and meaningful emotional support when they debrief with their professional peers... the people right there in the trenches with them.
Tyrone Wigfall
Because your peers speak the language! They know the exact pressure of the evaluation, the pace of the floor, the feeling when a patient struggles.
Amelia
Girl, yes! I call it the therapist friend trap. So many adult learners give away 100 percent of their empathy to their patients, their kids, their spouses... and then they have zero left for themselves. You cannot pour from an empty cup!
Tyrone Wigfall
You really cannot. So what is the fix when you are standing in the hallway feeling overwhelmed?
Amelia
You build a two person squad huddle! A micro reset. Before you walk into that patient room or take that skill exam, you pull a classmate aside for 30 seconds. You do a quick vibe check. Just say, hey, I am nervous, or man, that last room was heavy. Just getting it out of your body changes everything.
Tyrone Wigfall
Man, that 30 second check in... that is real power right there.
Chapter 3
Small Wins and the Community Roll Call
Tyrone Wigfall
See, we gotta redefine resilience. People talk about self care like it is bubble baths and organic smoothie bowls. But in real life healthcare, self care is stress management and interpersonal connection. Those are actual clinical safety tools.
Amelia
100 percent! I mean, I remember back when I was juggling three different creative gigs and trying to pay rent... um, I felt like a total fraud some days. I walked into this meeting convinced everyone knew I had no idea what I was doing.
Tyrone Wigfall
Oh, I have been there! Look, when we co founded ISH, I was managing enrollment, marketing, classroom setup... everything. One afternoon early on, I was sitting at my desk feeling like the whole world was crashing down on my shoulders.
Amelia
What happened?
Tyrone Wigfall
One of our instructors walked past, stopped, looked at me and said... Tyrone, you are building something that matters, keep going. That was it! Ten words. But it turned my whole week around.
Amelia
That is the power of being seen! And that is why we are here today.
Tyrone Wigfall
That is right! So let us do a real community roll call right now to wrap us up!
Amelia
Shoutout to the student turning in assignments at midnight after a twelve hour shift!
Tyrone Wigfall
Shoutout to every working parent balancing studying with bedtime stories!
Amelia
And shoutout to every single caregiver showing up for their community with heart and hustle. You belong here, you are doing the work, and we see you!
Tyrone Wigfall
Keep pushing, family. Have a great shift, stay grounded, and we will catch you next time!
